Eastman's Clockworks

My name is William “ Joe ” Eastman and I am the owner/operator of Eastman's Clockworks.  In addition to running the Eastman’s Clockworks web site, I also operate a clock repair shop from my home in Hillsborough, NC.  Please contact me if I can help you with any antique clock repair needs!

Repair Services

Eastman’s Clockworks offers complete repair services for all antique clocks as well as contemporary clocks with mechanical movements.  All clocks repaired in my shop have the following general services performed:

Inspection of clock movement and case to identify required repairs.  I will provide the clock owner with an up-front estimate of repair charges based on this initial inspection.
Ultrasonic cleaning of clock movement.  I use modern professional ultrasonic cleaning machines, non-ammoniated cleaning solution, water-displacing rinses and drying machines to clean the grime that invariably accumulates in clock mechanisms (often leading to wear of the metal movement and to clock malfunction).
Brass bushings are replaced when required.  The grime of old lubricants mixed with dust and metal shavings from the worn pivots of the wheel train actually grind away the brass of the plates holding the wheel train together.  This wear can become significant over time causing the wheel arbors to shift position between the plates, resulting in loss of power to the wheel train.  Repairing the worn pivot holes in the plates by installing new brass bushings will restore the positions of the wheels and ensure appropriate power transfer throughout the wheel train.
Pivots are polished when required.  Grooves are often worn into the pivots of the wheel arbors over time as the pivots turn in their pivot holes, again resulting in loss of power to the wheel train.
Parts are repaired or replaced if required. I seek to maintain the integrity and value of each clock we repair.  I repair original parts when possible, and only turn to replace parts when repairs are impractical.  I will seek to obtain quality replacement parts or part restorations from trusted vendors when parts cannot be repaired or are damaged to an unsightly extent.  Approval of part replacement/restorations from the clock owner will always be sought prior to completing the repair.
After the movement is cleaned and reassembled, I put the movement on a stand to  test it under its own power.  This process normally takes several days to ensure that the full power of the springs or weights is being transferred to the wheel train and that time keeping is accurate.

The following services are also available as requested: case cleaning, dial restoration, glass replacement, tablet restoration, and veneer repair.
